Eighth Grade Holocaust Unit

Through our research from the United States Holocaust Museum Website, Voices of the Holocaust and many other non-fiction books about the holocaust, students will attempt to answer the following questions: How did the Holocaust happen in the first place? How were the victims persecuted? What was the resistance to the Nazis during the holocaust? Why should we remember the holocaust? Who was responsible for the holocaust?

I think that the theme of Anne Frank the diary of a young girl, was about a teen wanting to do regular things that regular teens did. For example in the story she writes " I have a crave for dancing and ballet at the moment, but I can’t" That shows how she wanted to be normal and have privileges

I think that the theme is to never forget things in the past. In this book we are seeing what happened through her eyes; her experiences and feelings. This book really makes you see all of the victims of the holocaust as normal people, who didn’t really understand what was happening to them. It really makes you feel sad for them. You can almost imagine yourself in that position. Anne Frank is just an average, normal, teenage girl, who has her ambitions and dreams. She wants to become a journalist, and to write, so that she can still go on living after her death, because people will read what she has written. She is also a critic of her work. She strives to become better each time. She loves to write. I found this on page 197 in the book Anne Frank. As she says in her own words, “…I must work, so as not to be a fool, to get on, to become a journalist, because that’s what I want! I know that I can write, a couple of my stories are good…I am the best and sharpest critic of my own work. I know myself what is and what is now well written. Anyone who doesn’t write doesn’t know how wonderful it is; I used to bemoan the fact that I couldn’t draw at all, but now I am more than happy that I can at least write. And if I haven’t any talent for writing books or newspaper articles, well, then I can always write for myself…I want to go on living even after my death! And therefore I am grateful to God for giving me this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me…I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage reborn. But, and that is the great question, will I ever be able to write anything great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer? I hope so, oh, I hope so very much, for I can recapture everything when I write, my thoughts, my ideals and my fantasies…So I go on again with fresh courage; I think I shall succeed, because I want to write!” Little did Anne know, was that her dream would come true. She has lived on after her death. Now we can all remember, and be sure to never repeat that horrible event.
THE END

I agree with both Yolanda and Kiana. I think that it is a mixture of both.

I agree with Alyssa but some of it was wrong for example she says she wanted to live and have people read this diary. When really she did not know that her diary was going to be published. Anne Frank to me NEVER wanted people to read her diary she just wanted to become something if she ever came out of her miserable life.

The theme of the Diary of Anne Frank is about a young girl who had to stay away from the outside world and be shut away from everything else. It's to never forget about the past and to not make the same mistakes. In this book it shows of how she wishes and needs to be able to have someone to talk to. So she can just have a normal life with her family.

I think that Anne Frank is a girl that just needed someone to talk to. Because she didn’t have any friends in the “Secret Annex” she made up one. Her friend ended up being her diary; she calls her friend “Kitty”. Like a true friend Kitty listens to Anne and remembers everything that was said.

Alyssa I agree with you. Kiana I also agree with you. If I were Anne Frank I would also wish that I could have a life outside of a few rooms that she is staying in. My space would feel invaded; I would want to be able to have my own life.

I think the theme of a diary of a young is that she didn’t get a chance to grow up like a normal young teen would because she was stuck in a room for about 18 months. Towards the beginning of the book she liked Peter but she couldn’t express how she felt about him because she had to be quiet.

I agree with all of you because she wanted to be a young girl that can do normal things but she can't because she is stuck in a room and she has to be quiet.

I wonder why Anne Frank likes her dad more than her mom.

The theme of The Diary Of Anne Frank is to never forget the Holocaust and to never repeat it. In part of the book were Anne likes Peter I think that shows a part were Anne really needs some one else. In this part of the book it really shows how that Anne needs someone to talk with about Peter, her life, and problems she has. She’s growing up with no one to talk about. She is stuck in a small room having to grow up. She doesn't get to enjoy growing up like she should be able to.

Nahkyung I also agree with you. Bobbi, even though she had her diary that she called her friend don't you think she would want somebody she could socialize in person with. Someone she can share all her secrets with.

The theme of Anne Frank the diary of a young girl is to never forget the holocaust. We should never forget because Anne Frank wasn’t able to live a normal life as a young girl. She was forced to keep quiet all day, she wasn’t able to run and play in the fresh air, and she wasn’t able to play with other kids. The book also brings up the fact that she had no one else to talk to except peter and her diary. There was a part where Anne had liked peter but since there was no one else her age to talk to she was forced to keep it to her self. None of these things seemed to bring Anne down. She always seemed to look at the bright side of things. For example she kept mentioning how she was sure that they were going to make it through the war and that the war would soon end. No matter how bad things got she never complained. Another thing is that she was always so sure she was going to have a future, she always knew she would go somewhere in life. It ended up that she didn’t get the chance to do some of the things she wanted to do in life but she did achieve one thing. She managed to teach people a lesson about this terrible event, and taught them to try to stay thinking about the positive side of things and to keep dreaming of their futures.

Nice comment Dahkota! I never really quite thought of it that way.
I think you all have good comments, and I agree with most of them.
